Disc, Cylindrical and Oscillating System Explained

Disc systems handle general scrubbing and take either a brush or a pad, cylindrical configurations sweep loose debris while they scrub, and oscillating machines apply an even but aggressive action that suits deep cleaning. The system on the machine, and the brush or pad fitted to it, decide how well the machine cleans a given floor.

What does the scrubbing deck actually do?

The deck applies mechanical agitation to the floor under downward pressure. This is what separates a scrubber dryer from any form of mopping. The solution loosens the soil chemically, the deck breaks its bond with the floor mechanically, and the squeegee and vacuum then remove both together.

Because the deck does the work, matching it to the flooring type matters more than almost any other specification detail. The same machine can perform very differently depending on what is fitted to it.

How do disc systems work?

A disc system uses one or two circular heads that rotate flat against the floor. It is the most common configuration and the most versatile, because the head accepts either a brush or a pad drive holding a floor pad.

Disc machines suit smooth and lightly textured floors, which covers the majority of commercial and industrial surfaces. They are simple, widely supported and available across almost the whole range, from the compact Nilfisk SC100 up to large ride-on machines.

Brush or pad: which should you fit to a disc machine

A brush cleans by working bristles into the surface, which suits textured floors, tiles with grouting and anywhere dirt sits below the surface plane. A pad cleans by abrading the surface evenly, which suits smooth floors and gives a more uniform finish.

Pads are colour coded by how aggressive they are, running from very light pads for polishing and maintenance through to heavy pads for stripping. Fitting too aggressive a pad is one of the most common ways a floor finish gets damaged, so it is worth confirming the correct grade for your flooring rather than defaulting to the most aggressive option available.

What is a cylindrical configuration and when does it help?

A cylindrical configuration uses one or more roller brushes that rotate about a horizontal axis, in the manner of a sweeper brush rather than a floor polisher. Many standard scrubber dryers are available in a cylindrical configuration, including the Truvox Multiwash Pro range.

Using a cylindrical configuration can also offer a sweeping action, which sweeps up loose debris while it scrubs. Debris is thrown into a collection tray rather than being dragged across the floor. This makes it well suited to textured safety flooring, entrance areas and floors that would otherwise need sweeping first.

Cylindrical brushes also work into the surface of textured flooring more effectively than a flat pad, which is why they are frequently specified where safety flooring or tiles with deep grouting are involved. A steam variant is available in the Truvox range where enhanced hygiene is required.

What are oscillating systems?

Oscillating systems move the head in a rapid vibrating motion rather than rotating it. Orbital and articulated systems, including the I-MOP and the Viper AS7910 TO, apply an oscillating but even, aggressive action that suits deep cleaning and can reduce chemical use.

Two things follow from that. The even action means the machine is less likely to leave swirl marks on a uniform floor, and the aggressive agitation often achieves a result with less detergent, which reduces both chemical cost and the amount of residue left behind. Where a floor needs stripping or deep restoration, an oscillating head is frequently the more effective tool.

How does downward pressure affect the result?

Downward pressure determines how hard the brush or pad is pressed into the floor. More pressure lifts heavier soiling but uses more energy, wears consumables faster and risks damaging softer or coated surfaces. Less pressure protects the finish but may not shift ingrained dirt.

Many machines allow pressure to be adjusted. The correct setting depends on the flooring type and the level of soiling, and it is worth establishing at handover rather than leaving the machine on its default setting indefinitely.

How do the three systems compare?

When should brushes and pads be replaced?

Brushes need replacing when the bristles have flattened or worn short, because a worn brush no longer applies effective agitation regardless of the downward pressure set. Pads need replacing when they are worn thin or heavily loaded with soil, as a saturated pad simply moves dirt around.

Declining cleaning performance is usually a consumables problem before it is a machine problem. Checking the brush or pad is the first thing to do when a machine appears to be underperforming.
